Pleasantly cool.

That’s the whole idea. A hammock, a book, a long breakfast and the sea at the bottom of the path. Nothing to catch, nowhere to be.

A day in
the valley
no clock needed

“You don’t need a clock here,” someone wrote about Kabak years ago. The valley tells the time with sounds.

  1. 05:50A goat bellCicadas first, then the first bell a few minutes later. The valley’s alarm clock, accurate to about five minutes.
  2. 06:30The roosterIt crows to ask whether the grown-ups are up yet. Not yet.
  3. 08:00Tea glasses on saucersEggs cooked to order, bread from the village oven, tea that keeps coming. It runs until eleven and nobody is moved along.
  4. 09:30Water over stoneAn hour up the valley floor through fig and plane trees, to a cold pool. Go in the morning, and take water.
  5. 11:00Pages turningReading in a hammock in the shade is, by a wide margin, the most reported activity in the valley.
  6. 13:30CicadasSummer afternoons average 29 degrees. The middle of the day belongs to the shade; nobody climbs the hill before five.
  7. 15:30Pebbles under the wavesTwenty minutes down through the pines. Coarse sand and pebble, water that drops away fast, and a small sea cave under the cliffs for confident swimmers.
  8. 19:00Plates on the long tableBack up before the light goes. Dinner is a buffet: whatever came up the hill that morning, meze, something slow cooked, salad from the garden.
  9. 20:27Everyone goes quietIn late June the sun sets at 20:27. People watch it from the slope, not the beach.
  10. 22:30Crickets, a dog, wavesAlmost no light pollution; the Milky Way in remarkable detail. Bring a torch for the way back.

on footThe Lycian Way
passes above us

  1. Lycian Way 01/05

    Turkey’s first long-distance trail

Kate Clow waymarked it in 1999: 760 km from Fethiye to Antalya, about 35 days on foot.

  2. Lycian Way 02/05

    Follow the red and white

Old footpaths and mule trails, marked every 50 metres on rocks and trees.

  3. Lycian Way 03/05

    Faralya to Kabak

    • 7–11 km
    • 2.5–5 hours
    • up to 780 m

The path runs high above Butterfly Valley, then comes down into Kabak.

  4. Lycian Way 04/05

Walk a stage, sleep in Kabak

Kabak Bay is one of the camping stops along the way, and the trail passes right above the camp.

  5. Lycian Way 05/05

    Spring and autumn

February to May, September to November. Summer is too hot for long walks.
